Senior Night for Townie Baseball - Bitter Sweet

Posted

Although the EPHS baseball team started the night off in high spirits with introductions of their senior players along with their parents, the team's sloppy play on the field and lack of timely hitting led to a 4-1 loss to Cumberland High School.

Senior workhorse pitcher Kyle Marquis held off the potent Cumberland offense for most of the game as the Clippers held a 1-0 lead until the 6th inning.

The Townies couldn't muster up key hits when needed and committed 4 errors in the game. EP scored its lone run in the 6th inning with a lead-off single by Jared Estrella who promptly stole 2nd base. Adam hit a drive to center which was caught and Estrella tagged up and went to 3rd. A Marc Lavalley single scored Estrella but the brief Townie rally was snuffed out when Mike Allienello flied out to center field and Lavalley was thrown out at 3rd trying to tag up.

The Townies got base hits from Tyler Maxwell and Dereck Silva in the last of the 7th but the rally died as Cumberland took home the 4-1 win. The Clippers scored two runs in the 6th and one in the 7th.

East Providence will play Barrington today (Thursday) in a 3:30 pm game at Barrington High. The Townies need a win to stay in the playoff hunt.
