June 15, 2017 Providence, RI…Providence Children’s Museum will open Voyage to Vietnam: Celebrating the Tet Festival on Friday, June 16, 2017. The new exhibition promotes understanding of Vietnamese culture, and invites children and their caregivers to discover the beauty, sights and sounds of Vietnam through its most important celebration of the year, Tet.

Voyage to Vietnam: Celebrating the Tet Festival showcases traditions, customs and values exemplified by the annual celebration of Tet. Through interactive exhibits, families will immerse themselves in Vietnamese culture, gain appreciation for traditions, values and daily experiences of people who live in Vietnam, and discover similarities and differences between their lives in the U.S. and the lives of families in Vietnam. Visitors are welcomed into the exhibit through the New Year gateway, and are transported to the Tet Festival in modern day Vietnam. The immersive Marketplace invites families to select traditional flowers and faux food items to prepare for the celebration. Families can pose for interactive family photos, dress up in customary Ao Dai, try on a giant Lion Dance Mask, and create a fireworks display to signal the coming of the New Year.

The grand opening of the exhibit will be on Friday, June 16, 2017, from 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM, during PCM’s MetLife Family Friday. Explore the exhibit and celebrate the Vietnamese traditional Tet Festival with hands-on activities and a dynamic presentation by the Imperial Lion Dance Troupe from Worcester, MA.

In celebration of Voyage to Vietnam, special programs and Vietnamese art-making will be offered throughout July and August in the Museum’s Discovery Studio and the Children’s Garden, including a Lantern Festival on Friday, July 7, from 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM.

“Research tells us that pretend play is one of the best ways for kids to learn to take other perspectives,” says Providence Children’s Museum Exhibit Director Jessica Neuwirth. “In Voyage to Vietnam, kids get to immerse themselves in the sights and sounds of a Vietnamese community celebrating an important holiday, Tet. It is our hope that the exhibit will indeed promote a better understanding of Vietnamese people and culture.”

Voyage to Vietnam: Celebrating the Tet Festival was created by Children's Discovery Museum of San Jose, and is part of the Freeman Foundation Asian Culture Exhibit Series, funded by The Freeman Foundation and administered by Association of Children's Museums. The exhibit is sponsored locally by the June Rockwell Levy Foundation.

Voyage to Vietnam: Celebrating the Tet Festival will be open at Providence Children’s Museum from June 16 – September 4, 2017.
