Touch a Lighthouse Pet at Touch-a-Truck

Posted

Friends of Pomham Rocks Lighthouse will celebrate their 150th year at The East Providence Chamber of Commerce’s Touch-a-Truck. The event will be held on Saturday, September 24 from 9:30 AM to 2 PM at the Chamber’s parking lot behind their offices at 1011 Waterman Avenue, East Providence. The Lighthouse booth will feature a replica wooden lighthouse photo display. Children are welcome to have their photo taken through one of the windows of the lighthouse.

As a special treat, this year Touch-a-Truck visitors will be able to interact with one of Pomham’s new lighthouse pets. Lighthouse keepers often had a dog or cat to keep them company while on their watch. Pomham Rocks Lighthouse is fortunate to have models of two of these lighthouse pets. A lifelike model of Tommy the Cat, the black and white tuxedo cat of lighthouse keeper Adolf Aaronson, will be at the booth. Tommy was renowned for his ability to jump off the rocky cliff of the island and catch fish in the Providence River. He will be joined by a model of Jennifer, the two-toned companion dog of the last lighthouse keeper, Dennis Tardiff. Both lighthouse pets respond with lifelike movements and sounds to motion and touch. They are part of the Joy for All Companion Pet Collection and were donated by Ageless Innovation in Pawtucket.

Individuals and families interested in joining Friends of Pomham Rocks Lighthouse can pick up a membership application to be part of the continuing year-long celebration of the 150th year of The Lighthouse. For further details, visit www.pomhamrockslighthouse.org
