Sebastian M. Porto, 76, of East Providence, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family Friday evening, Nov. 24, 2017. He was the beloved husband of Mary T. (Moniz) Porto.

Born January 20, 1941, in Sao Miguel, Azores, he was a son of the late Manuel and Estrella (Medeiros) Porto. He was a graduate of Apponequet Regional High School and of New Bedford Institute of Technology. He worked as a master electrician for the Ocean Steel Company. He served as a Scoutmaster for Troop 7 and was a 39 year member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1528.

Sebastian will be remembered as a wonderful husband, father and devoted grandfather. He will be greatly missed.

Sebastian proudly served our country during the Vietnam War with the US Navy as an electrician’s mate aboard the destroyers USS Myles C. Fox, the USS Witek, and the USS Mitchener.

In addition to his wife of 51 years, he leaves his daughter, Mary T. (Porto) Smith and her husband Michael, and by his son, Sebastian J. Porto and his wife Lynn; and his 5 grandchildren, Alexis, Lillian, Nicholas, Hadley and Harrison. He was the brother of Joseph D. Porto, Mary Adriana Carter and Michael Porto. He also leaves several nieces and nephews.

His funeral will begin Wednesday, Nov. 29, at 9am from the Rebello Funeral Home and Crematory, 901 Broadway, East Providence, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10am in St. Francis Xavier Church, No. Carpenter St., East Providence. Military honors and burial will follow at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Callings hours will be Tuesday, 5pm until 8pm.
