Rumford Resident to Run 126th Boston Marathon in Honor of Diabetes Research

Posted

Not only is Alex Pease the newest clinical pharmacist at Joslin Diabetes Center, a world-renowned diabetes research and care facility in Boston, but he’s also running the Boston Marathon this year as a member of Team Joslin.

Alex started working for Joslin this year as the first person to hold his position, which is a new role. “Everyone at Joslin was very welcoming,” Alex said. He previously worked in diabetes management at a healthcare facility in Rhode Island.

Alex refers to himself as a born and bred New Englander; he was born in Massachusetts but spent most of his life in Rhode Island and currently resides in Rumford, commuting to Boston during the week.

Alex ran in high school but did not enjoy it at the time. He got back into running a few years ago after having children. Alex is a father of four and his children range in age from four months to five-and-a-half years old. How does he make time for training, working, and taking care of the kids? “During the week my mornings usually start at around 4:30 a.m.,” Alex said.

This will be Alex’s fourth time running a marathon. He previously ran in Narragansett, completed a virtual marathon during the COVID-19 pandemic and headed to the West Coast to participate in the Seattle Marathon, where he received his qualifying time for Boston. When Alex joined Joslin as a pharmacist, he reached out to his colleagues who were coordinating Team Joslin and was hopeful he’d be able to join. They welcomed him with open arms. “I got my Joslin swag and I’m excited to be a part of the team,” Alex said.

Alex has two goals for this marathon. He’s looking forward to raising money for Joslin and has had some family and friends donate since starting his fundraising page. “I’m looking to bump the donations up a little more,” he said. As a personal goal, Alex also hopes to finish the marathon in under three hours, so he can qualify for the New York Marathon this November.
