Rick Lawson Announces Intent to Run for City Council At-Large

Community activist and Riverside resident plans to be a candidate in 2022

Rick Lawson, a third generation Townie raised in and still a resident of Riverside, issues the following statement concerning his plans to seek the At-Large seat on the City Council in 2022.

Mr. Lawson said “I have decided to run for Council At-Large in 2022 and will be making a formal announcement of my candidacy at a kickoff event after the first of the new year. I will be running because after a decade of attending and/or watching city council meetings I believe I have a strong understanding of how East Providence operates. I would like to serve our city by helping foster improvements to services and making sound financial decisions based on factual data driven analysis.”

Mr. Lawson is the founder and former chairman of the East Providence Arts Council which created The Looff, an award-winning arts festival that takes place yearly at Crescent Park. He has also been a member of various boards and commissions in the city including the Charter Review Commission. He is currently a member of the Waterfront Commission.

Mr. Lawson is a product of the East Providence school system having graduated from East Providence High School in 1987 after attending Riverside Junior High as well as the Oldham and Platt elementary schools. He has a BA in Psychology from the University of RI and an AA in General Studies from the Community College RI with an emphasis on IT coursework.

Mr. Lawson is currently employed at Brown University as an IT Support Consultant, having previously worked in the Lifespan IT department. Before his IT work he was employed as a Mileau Therapist in the Developmentally Disabled Unit at Bradley Hospital working with special needs kids, primarily in classrooms.

Mr. Lawson served in the United States Air Force where he was a Command and Control specialist with a top secret security clearance assigned to the 509th Bomb Wing, Strategic Air Command which was part of the US nuclear deterrent.

This will be Mr. Lawson’s first run for elected office.
