Reps. Edwards, Canario work to ensure $100,000 compensation to Tiverton for hosting Twin River

State House — Through the efforts of House Majority Whip John G. Edwards (D-Dist. 70, Portsmouth, Tiverton) and Rep. Dennis M. Canario (D-Dist. 71, Portsmouth, Tiverton, Little Compton) the state budget passed by the House of Representatives will include compensation to the town of Tiverton in its role as host of Twin River-Tiverton.

A portion of the budget (Article 4) includes language that will mandate an annual flat fee $100,000 each to the towns of Tiverton and Lincoln in compensation for serving as the host communities for sports wagering.

“With the addition of sports wagering in Rhode Island and the subsequent revenue that the state will retain, it’s only fair that Tiverton and Lincoln be given appropriate compensation for their important roles as host communities,” said Representative Edwards.

Amng the key terms of an agreement that will allow sports betting in Rhode Island, the state will retain 51 percent of the sports wagering revenue.

“This is an important win for Tiverton,” said Representative Canario. “I am gratified that we were able to secure this compensation for the host communities and I thank my colleagues in the House of Representatives for approving this budget article.”

The budget now moves to the State Senate for consideration.
