East Providence, RI — Providence Country Day School was recently selected as one of five schools nationally to be part of the inaugural cohort of NAIS Lab Schools. Hosted by the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), the initiative will help drive innovation in independent schools around the country.

As a key contributor to the project, leaders from PCD will work with four other schools to develop and test strategic planning frameworks and processes. “Opportunities and challenges exist for every school,” notes NAIS president Donna Orem. “The Lab Schools Project will help independent schools identify how they can thrive in a changing landscape. This is not a one-size-fits-all approach. We selected schools that are willing to be bold in the creation and implementation of strategy."

Providence Country Day Head of School, Vince Watchorn, is excited to advance PCD’s program by collaborating with the thinkers and practitioners at the forefront of educational innovation. “Whenever we have the opportunity to step outside our immediate environment and learn from others’ experiences, we position ourselves to examine how we do things and do them better.”

In addition to Providence Country Day, four other schools will participate in the first cohort of the NAIS Lab Schools: Allendale Columbia School (New York), The Darrow School (New York), Grace Episcopal Day School (Maryland), and Grosse Pointe Academy (Michigan.)

The National Association of Independent Schools is a membership organization for private K–12 schools that are self-determining in mission and program and are governed by independent boards. NAIS works to empower independent schools and the students they serve.

The Providence Country Day School, established in 1923, is a college preparatory school serving students in grades 6-12. The diverse student population draws from more than 45 communities throughout Southeastern New England. The school’s educational program balances rigorous academics, visual and performing arts, and competitive athletics. The mission and values are upheld by a faculty distinguished by academic excellence and deep personal commitment.
