Maureen M. Sprague, 83, of Rumford, passed away surrounded by her three children on Sunday, March 10, 2019 at Miriam Hospital following a brief illness. Born in Providence, she was the daughter of the late Donald and Margaret (McAloon) McCaffrey and sister of the late Gerald McCaffrey. She was the wife of the late Joseph J. Sprague. Maureen is survived by her three children, Joseph John Sprague (Lynda), Kathleen Sprague, and Elizabeth [Liz] Macnie. She was the loving grandmother of Paige, Kathryn and Jenna Macnie and Sarah Sprague, and the aunt of Judy (Gervais) Giuliani.

Maureen grew up in the Summit neighborhood of Providence before moving to Rumford where she lived for more than 60 years. She graduated from St. Mary’s Academy – Bay View. Upon graduation she worked at Narragansett Wire Company where she forged lifelong friendships. After staying at home to raise her family, she returned to the workforce, eventually retiring from the State of Rhode Island, Dept of Human Services. She was a member at Wannamoisett Country Club for more than 50 years.

She was a faithful parishioner at St. Margaret’s Church in Rumford and had close ties with Our Lady of Loreto (East Providence) and St. Teresa’s (Pawtucket). As a devout Catholic she attended daily Mass and her faith informed her entire life.

In addition to faith and family, Maureen was passionate about traveling especially in her retirement years. Her travels brought her to all seven continents and featured visits to China, Egypt and The Holy Land as well as many North American destinations.

Maureen could often be spotted on her daily, early-morning power walks in and around the streets of Rumford and more recently on the treadmill at a local gym. She was an avid reader and frequent visitor to Weaver Library.

She had a ready smile and loved to laugh with a sense of humor that bordered on silly. She was a loyal friend to many, was selfless and caring, never expecting anything in return.

Maureen was the embodiment of class and grace, and her example of a life well lived will continue to inspire all who knew her.

Her funeral will be held on Friday, March 15, 2019 at 9:00 AM from the Perry-McStay Funeral Home, 2555 Pawtucket Avenue, East Providence with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM in St. Margaret’s Church, Pawtucket Avenue, Rumford.
