Mary Mitrelis

Mary Mitrelis, 92, passed away on Sunday, July 19, 2020 at her home. She was the wife of the late Theodore Mitrelis.

Born in Rumford, she was a daughter of the late Konstantinos and Zaharoula (Vasilikiotis) Tsonos. Mrs. Mitrelis, along with her husband, was the owner and operator of several restaurants including the former Theo’s Restaurant in East Providence. Prior to the restaurant business she worked as a secretary for many years, and after retiring worked at Macy’s Department Store. Mrs. Mitrelis was a lifelong member of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church in Pawtucket. She was a 1945 graduate of East Providence High School, a member of the Rhode Island Honor Society and a graduate of Bryant College. Mary’s grandson Nick had a very close relationship with his grandmother and wrote the following tribute to her. “My Yaya was a beautiful person. I know from all the precious years she was in my life that she had an unlimited capacity for love, kindness, forgiveness and generosity. She made the world a brighter, gentler and happier place.”

She leaves one daughter, Sophia Gonzalez and her husband Dr. Guillermo Gonzalez of Puerto Rico, one grandson, Nicholas T. Sotis, who lived with and cared for her in her later years, one sister, Anastasia Tsonos of Cumberland, and one brother, John Tsonos of Cumberland. She was the sister of the late Stephen C. Tsonos and George K. Tsonos.

Her funeral will be held on Friday, July 24, 2020 at 9:00 AM from the Perry-McStay Funeral Home, 2555 Pawtucket Avenue with a service to follow at 9:30 AM in the funeral home. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions to the Democratic National Committee would be appreciated.
