(January 7, 2019) – Come meet some awesome owls, hawks, turtles and other cool critters! Vacation week is WILD at Audubon, so bring the kids and join the fun.

Citizens Bank Free Family Fun Day
Owl Valentine
Audubon Nature Center and Aquarium, Bristol, RI
February 2, 2019; 9:00 am – 5:00 pm

Thanks to the Citizens Bank, the Audubon Nature Center and Aquarium is open free to the public the first Saturday of every month. Join us for crafts, nature stories, animal discoveries, hikes and more. No registration required.
10:00 am - 2:00 pm: Owl Valentine Craft table
10:00 am - 2:00 pm: Spot the Owl. Can you spot 10 owls in our exhibit hall? Spot them all and receive a prize to take home.
10:30 am & 2:30 pm: Owl Nature Story
11:30 am: Meet an Owl
1:30 pm: Nature Valentine: Use tree “cookies,” shortening, and bird seed to make special valentines for the feathered and furry friends in your backyard.

See the Stars at Caratunk
Audubon Caratunk Wildlife Refuge, Seekonk MA
February 10, 2019; 6:00 – 8:00 pm

Learn about the winter constellations at Caratunk and then head outdoors to view the moon, the Orion Nebula and more. Francine Jackson, Staff Astronomer at Brown University will lead this evening program. There will be a couple of telescopes available, but feel free to bring your own. Please dress appropriately the weather. Hot drinks and light snacks will be provided.

Audubon February School Vacation Week
Audubon Nature Center and Aquarium, Bristol, RI
February 18 – 22, 2019; 10:00 am – 2:00 pm

Don't know what to do with the family during the February school vacation break? Audubon is the solution! Special programs and activities are available each day and are free with admission. Registration is not required. Nature crafts will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. each day, as well as a Nature Story at 10:30 am and 2:30 pm and an animal interview at 1:30 pm.
The following special programs are also available each day at 11:00 am and are recommended for children ages 6+:
February 18: Extraordinary Raptors
Learn all about the adaptations, behavior, ecology and natural history of birds of prey. Demonstrations, hands-on activities and biofacts will help illuminate the fascinating lives of these birds. Families will get up-close a live raptor!

February 19: Light and Color:
Test your sensory abilities by experimenting with bubbles and color science. What happens when you mix colors with salt water, milk or oil? Are bubbles always round? How do animals use color to survive? Come and solve the mystery! Wear clothes that can get messy.

February 20: Hooked on Fish
Be a sea researcher and dive in to get a fish-eye view into the fascinating world under the sea. Learn about the strange and unusual fish that call Narragansett Bay home from the tiny mummichugs to the great white shark.

February 21: Surviving the Cold!
It’s cold out there! Join Audubon and conduct some experiments to find out how animals survive in the winter.

February 22: Winter CSI
Nature offers some unique learning opportunities. Use your investigative skills to find clues in nature and learn about our living landscape. Come and find out “who-dun-it?” This program will take place outside, so please dress for the weather.

Dr. Seuss' The Lorax and Plant a Seed
Hear and see the classic environmental tale of Dr. Seuss' The Lorax, who 'speaks for the trees.' Learn about what YOU can do to be a good steward to the earth and the trees. After the story, plant some seeds to take home.

Build a Bluebird House
You can help bluebirds and other cavity-nesting birds in your area by providing them with a sturdy nesting box. Come learn about bluebirds and other cavity nesters, when and where to place the nest box, and how to care for it. Each adult/child pair will get one kit to complete.

Whoo Ate That? - Owl Pellet Workshop
Many birds cough up pellets containing objects they cannot digest such as bones, shells, and fur; but nobody does it quite like owls. Come and investigate what we can learn from owl pellets. Dissect your own sterilized pellet and play detective as you identify whose skeletons are inside.

Nature Photo Scavenger Hunt
How many scavenger hunt items can you find and photograph out on the refuge within the time allotted? Easy items are one point. Harder ones are five or ten points. Special prize awarded for the most points, but all participants will get a nature treat bag. Bring your smartphone or a digital camera with a view screen to take photos.

Colonial Candlemaking
Come make an old fashioned hand-dipped candle. Long ago the land of Powder Mill Ledges was a farm with a tavern on the old turnpike where travelers met at tables lit by candles and a big fire hearth. We don't have a hearth, but we can make our own hand-dipped candles the old fashioned way. Each participant will create their own hand-dipped candle to take home.

Preschool Adventures
Audubon Nature Center and Aquarium, Bristol, RI
February 26, March 5, 12, 19, 2019; 10:00 – 11:00 am

Nature comes alive for children ages 3-5. Children will participate in games, hikes, crafts, songs, hands-on activities and more as they are introduced to the wonders of nature. Space is limited to 12 children so please register early. Adults must accompany children and there are no refunds for missed classes. Younger siblings are not permitted to attend.
