Jose Nunes Mendes, of Rumford, Rhode Island, passed away peacefully on October 25, 2023, at the age of 90 in RI Hospital, Providence. Born on July 28, 1933, in Vila De Rei, Portugal, Jose was the son of the late Jose D. and Ermelinda (Nunes) Mendes. He immigrated to the United States and settled in the Fox Point section of Providence before moving to Rumford in 1969.

Jose was the beloved husband of Maria C. (Paulo) Mendes for over 62 years. Their bond was one of deep love and mutual respect, a testament to their long, happy marriage. Their union blessed them with two children, Dennis Mendes and his wife Alison of Rumford, and Edith Zitrides and her husband George of Laughlin, Nevada. He was a loving father who instilled the values of hard work, perseverance, and compassion in his children.

In addition to his wife and children, Jose was the cherished brother of Ramiro "Ray" Mendes of Rumford, and Mary Martins of East Providence. He was predeceased by his brothers Abel Mendes and Peter Mendes. As a grandfather, he was a source of wisdom and comfort to Diane Powers, Brian Raymond Jr., Zachary J. Mendes, Damon P. Mendes, Dylan T. Mendes. He was also a proud great-grandfather of four and a loving uncle to numerous nieces and nephews.

Jose was a dedicated maintenance worker for the East Providence School Department for many years. His colleagues recognized him for his unwavering commitment, diligence, and the pride he took in his work. He was a handyman who could fix anything and was always willing to lend a hand when needed.

Jose was a devout parishioner of Our Lady of the Rosary Church. His faith was a guiding light in his life, providing him with comfort and strength in times of need. He was also a longtime member of the Portuguese Beneficent Club, serving as secretary for over 10 years. His commitment to the club was an extension of his passion for his Portuguese heritage and community. He also held various roles in the Holy Rosary Band Society, including a brief stint as president.

Jose was a pillar of the Portuguese community in Rumford. His passion for his heritage was infectious, and he worked tirelessly to uplift his community. He was a wise man, whose life experiences had taught him the value of understanding and empathy. He was always ready with a word of advice or encouragement for those who sought it. His passion for helping others was evident in his involvement with various community organizations.

Jose will be remembered for his wisdom, his handy skills, and his passionate dedication to his community. He was a man who loved deeply and lived fully, leaving a lasting impact on everyone who knew him. His legacy will live on in the lives of his family, friends, and community.

The void left by Jose's passing will be felt by many, but his memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved him. His spirit will continue to inspire and guide us. Jose lived a life full of love, dedication, and service, and for that, he will forever be remembered.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday October 30, 2023, at 11:00am in Our Lady of the Rosary Church, 21 Traverse Street, Providence. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours will be from 10:00am – 11:00 am IN THE CHURCH.
