John Antone “Johnny” Costa, Sr., passed away January 5, 2020. He was born on September 19, 1938 in Providence, RI.

He was the husband of Nancy N. (Andrade) Costa.

Born on September 19, 1938 in Providence, RI, he was a son of the late Antone and Emma (Dias) Costa.

Johnny grew up in the “Point” (Fox Point). In his youth he spent most of his time at the Sheldon Street Church summer school, Sunday School and with great friends. He attended Providence Public Schools including, Arnold Street School, Benefit Street School, Thayer Street School, Nathan Bishop Jr. High and Central Vocations School (Printing).

Mr. Costa joined the US Army on September 20, 1955 the day after his seventeenth birthday and was Honorably Discharged on September 19, 1958. Johnny went on to work for Salte Sea Company canning clam chowder, chopped and mixed clams. He was a warehousemen for Sunoco Oil before retiring. Johnny was a graphic artist who loved music and records. He enjoyed talking to everyone and getting to know them from when he worked at Tillies in Providence as a Bartender and Manager.

Besides his wife he leaves one son, John “Buddy” Costa, Jr. and his wife Jackie of Rialto, CA, two daughters, Sheila Costa and Marie Thimas both of St. Petersburg, FL and their mother Barbara Costa of Providence, one sister, Jean Warner of Seekonk, MA, and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Ernest Costa.

His funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 9, 2020 at 10:30 AM in the Sheldon Street Baptist Church, Fox Point, Providence. Burial will be held in the Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, 301 South County Trail, Exeter. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday from 4-8.
