Joanna F. Britto, 73, of Blanche Avenue and a lifelong resident of the City of East Providence passed away on Tuesday, January 5, 2021 at Miriam Hospital. She was the beloved wife of the late Steven F. Britto. They were married for 39 years.

Born in East Providence, she was the daughter of the late Joseph S. Varan and Anna (Tabella) Varan Allen.

She was a graduate of East Providence High School, Class of 1965 and alumnus Class of 1983 of Johnson and Wales. During her professional career as an Administrative Assistant she has been employed in the office of the President at Brown University, the YWCA of Greater Rhode Island, the East Providence Public Library System and the office of the City Manager of East Providence. She was also known for her advocacy and fund raising efforts for many charities throughout the state. Throughout her lifetime she has held office and been a former member or volunteer in many organizations including, President and Vice President of the United Steelworkers of America, Local 15509, East Providence Professional Management Technical Employees Association (EPPMTEA) Officer and Board Member, the Vice President of the East Providence Coalition for Human Rights, East Providence Minority Political Caucus Vice President and Secretary, Vice President of the Cape Verdean Progressive Center and the City of East Providence’s United Way Campaign Coordinator.

Joanna was the mother of Steven F. Britto, Jr. of Providence and Quinn J. Britto of East Providence and the loving grandmother of Steven F. Britto, III, Quinn J. Britto, Jr. and Jelani Britto all of East Providence. Joanna is also survived by her sister, Evelyn J. Hudson and her husband Lance of Colorado, her brother, Amos R. Varan and his wife Joan of North Providence, the late Edmond F. Varan of Providence, Don Pedro Roderick and his wife Beverly and the late Anthony Roderick of Florida as well as many loved Godchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, January 9, 2021 at 10:00 AM in St. Francis Xavier Church, 79 North Carpenter Street, East Providence. Due to COVID 19 restrictions there will be no calling hours and the burial will be private. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to St. Jude’s Children Hospital.
