Girl Scouts Receive the Marian and I Live My Faith Awards

Posted

On March 12th, four members (shown above) of East Providence Girl Scout Cadette Troop 765 received the Marian Award. Bishop Tobin presented the award to the troop members at the conclusion of the mass held at St Peter and Paul's Cathedral in Providence. The Marian award is one of the highest honors for Catholic Girl Scouts. The award is given after an extensive study of Mary, the mother of Jesus, and the completion of a self-organized community service project. It is intended to help Catholic Girl Scouts develop an understanding of Mary as a model of openness and spirituality also.

For their community service project, the troop held a baby shower at each of the churches they attend: St. Brendan's Church in Riverside and St. Martha's Church in East Providence. Diapers, clothing, blankets, bottles, baby food, pacifiers, games and toys were received. They were distributed to families in need by personnel of the churches.

Ava Troino, also a member of East Providence Cadette Troop 765, earned the I Live Faith Award. The "I Live Faith" program is designed for youth to become more aware of the place that God and religion hold in their daily lives. The activities focus on developing awareness within the individuals of their potential as a growing person, a friend, a member of his or her family, a citizen and a participant in their community of faith. It takes between 3 and 6 months to complete the activities.

This is an action-oriented program, combined with opportunities for reflection and sharing. It complements and supports the more formal religious education provided by the Catholic schools and parish programs, especially the Confirmation Program. It takes between 3-6 months to complete the 18 activities and a closing composition required as part of the program.
