Gilberto O. Bettencourt, 69, passed away on Thursday, November 21, 2019 at Rhode Island Hospital surrounded by his loving family.

He was the husband of Eva M. (Batista) Bettencourt to whom he was married for 45 years.

Born in Feteira, Faial, Azores, he was a son of the late Carlos C. and Rosa L. (Oliveira) Bettencourt.

Mr. Bettencourt was an Army Veteran of the Portuguese Military and fought in the Angolan War. He worked in construction for many years before retiring. He was a member of the Holy Ghost Brotherhood of Charity and was instrumental in organizing community services. He was a loving and caring father who adored his grandchildren.

Besides his wife he leaves one daughter, Susie Thomsen and her husband David of East Providence and Steve Bettencourt and his wife Christine of East Providence, four grandchildren, Kevin and Jaden Bettencourt and David and Alex Thomsen, eight sisters, Maria Silva, Olinda Silva, Natalia Peixoto, DeOlinda Luna, Helena Garcia, Teresa Garcia, Lucia Fortuna and Lourdes Alves, one brother, Carlos Bettencourt and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Jose, Antonino, Serafim and Manuel Bettencourt.

His funeral will be held on Tuesday, November 26, 2019 at 9:00 AM from the Perry-McStay Funeral Home, 2555 Pawtucket Avenue, East Providence with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM in Saint Martha’s Church, Pawtucket Avenue. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Calling hours Monday 5-8.
