(May 31, 2019) – Who says outdoor fun is just for kids? From “Bats and Beer” and “Bugs and Bubbly” to a night of Full Moon Trivia, Audubon has plenty of cool evening programs for adults! So beat the heat, grab some friends, and head out for some lively nature at night!

Citizens Bank Free Family Fun Day

Edible Wild Plants Walk

The East Bay region is home to over 90 species of edible wild plants, some of which are more nutritious and flavorful than their cultivated counterparts. These include native species like Spicebush and Sassafras, weeds like Purslane and Chicory, and edible invasives like Wineberry and Black Locust. Join Russ Cohen, expert forager and author of Wild Plants I Have Known...and Eaten, on an evening ramble to learn about edible plant species. Identification tips, edible portions, seasons of availability and preparation methods will be discussed as will guidelines for safe and environmentally-responsible foraging.

Prudence Island Garden Tour

Calling all gardeners! Come explore some of the unique gardens kept by local residents of Prudence Island and learn about the area’s rich cultural and natural history. Stops will include three to four private gardens, each unique in their varieties of fruits, vegetables, flowers, and overall whimsy!

Fireflies

Come to Audubon for an evening celebrating the living lightshow that is the firefly. Learn about how they use their flickering lights to communicate and how to recognize them during the day. Make a glowing firefly craft to take home and end the evening by going out to the fields to watch for their blinking displays. Rain date is July 13, 2019.

Bird Banding with Audubon

Join Audubon for a bird banding demonstration in which experts capture, band, measure and release songbirds in order to gather data on their movements. Birds will be gently removed from tall “mist nets” set in Audubon’s shrubby habitats. The techniques of identifying, measuring, weighing, and banding the birds will be demonstrated before they are released. The migratory habits and life history of each captured species will be discussed.

Caratunk Butterfly Count

Ospreys: The Revival of the Global Raptor

The extraordinary revival in Osprey numbers that we are witnessing in New England has not been restricted to our shores. Nearly eliminated from most of Europe half a century ago, Ospreys are staging a remarkable comeback there as well -- from Scotland to Spain and France to Finland. Join local Osprey expert Alan Poole as he leads guests along on a three week summer trip through Europe, visiting Osprey researchers and gathering material for his recently published book: Ospreys: Revival of a Global Raptor. Poole’s book will be available for purchase and signing.

Wildflower Walk and Talk

Head out with Audubon Senior Director of Conservation Scott Ruhren to learn about the wide variety of plants and wildflowers growing at the Audubon Nature Center and Aquarium. Bats and Beer

Join Audubon for an evening of fun discussing the fascinating world of bats and tasting some local brew. Start with a brief presentation and learn about the bats that live in your area. Then head out onto the trails in search of these winged creatures. Stop at the pond to watch bats at work catching their evening meal and to look for the resident family beavers at work. Please bring a flashlight.

Bugs & Bubbly: An Evening Adventure for Adults

Join us for a summer evening with Ginger Brown, biologist and author, to learn more about nocturnal insects. A guided walk along the trails will lead to an “ultra-violet light show” that will attract a fascinating diversity of moths, beetles and more. As you enjoy the bug show, sip wine and enjoy light snacks. Bats and other nighttime creatures may show up as well! Leave the kids at home—this program is just for adults. Come prepared for an evening walk. Bug spray is recommended. Feel free to bring a portable chair.

Forest Bathing Walk
Audubon Fort Wildlife Refuge, North Smithfield, RI

Many scientific studies tell us that time in nature is key for our physical and mental health. Americans, on average, spend 93% of their time indoors! Join Audubon for a leisurely walk of shinrin-yoku, or Forest Bathing. With its roots in Japan, this walk will encourage you to focus on your physical body and what it is seeing, smelling and touching. This will be a walk focused on just "being" rather than "I.D.ing" out in nature. Please dress for the weather, including long pants and sturdy walking shoes.
