Frances Makepeace Gross

Frances Makepeace Gross, 95, passed away on March 6th at the Linn Health Care Center in East Providence, RI. She was the wife of the late Charles E Gross and the daughter of the late Constance Nightingale Makepeace and Charles Salisbury Makepeace.

Frannie grew up in Providence and graduated from Lincoln School. She worked for many years managing the book department at the Wayland Toy Shop. She was a member of Agawam Hunt, the Acoaxet Club and the Elephant Rock Beach Club. She was also a member of the Society of Mayflower Descendants, the Colonial Dames of America, the East Providence Historical Society, and the Providence Female Charitable Society. She was a member of the Permanent Deaconate of Central Congregational Church, and also served on the boards of Hamilton House and Tockwotten Home.

She lived for many years in Rumford where she loved the company of her family and friends, especially her grandchildren. She was an avid reader, often consuming several books a week.

He is survived by her two sons, Charles E. Gross, Jr. and his wife Julia of Ellington, CT and Peter H. Gross and his wife Robin of Rumford, RI, also by her grandchildren Stephen Gross, Virginia Newman, Corlis Gross and Frances Gross. She was predeceased by her brothers, Charles and William Makepeace, and by her grandson, Andrew Gross.

The family is very appreciative of the care given to her by the professional staff of both Brookdale Eastbay Senior Living and Linn Health Care Center.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, March 20 at 11 AM at Central Congregational Church, 296 Angell Street, Providence, RI. In lieu of flowers, donations in Frannie’s memory may be made to the Providence Female Charitable Society, PO Box 829, Saunderstown, RI 02874.
