Donald Spencer Atkins, 90, passed away peacefully at home on June 5,2018. He was the beloved husband of the late Helen (Rose)Atkins, whom he was married to for 50 years. Born in West Peru , Maine, he was the son of the late Clarence and Elsie Riley (Begley) Atkins and the step son of Walter Griswold.

Donald was a Navy veteran of WWII. He was East Providence firefighter for 7 years,leaving

to start college. He earned a Bachelor's Degree in Education from Providence College and went on to receive his Master's Degree at U.R.I. Donald taught English, History and German and was a guidance counselor for many years at Cranston High School West, retiring in 1993.

Donald is survived by his son Thomas Atkins of Riverside, with whom he resided, his daughters Elaine Atkins of Newport,R.I. , Eileen Connolly and her husband Jerry of Carver,Mass. He was the proud grandfather of Emily "banana", Matthew and Andrew Brown, several nieces, a nephew and long time family friend Maureen O'Rouke.

Donald was an avid reader and enjoyed many activities; from his monthly movie luncheons and walks with friends to attending local polo matches,watching soccer, the Bruins,Patriots,Red Sox and sailing with his son. Finally, those who knew him best, knew he enjoyed a "proper" martini stirred never shaken.

Visitation Monday, 5 - 8 pm in the Russell J. Boyle and Son Funeral Home, 331 Smith St., Providence. Funeral Tuesday at 9 am in the Russell J. Boyle & Son Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am in St. Patrick Church, 244 Smith St. Providence. Burial in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Providence. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Donald's name to the Carmelite Monastery 25 Watson Ave, Barrington, RI 02806
