Alfred “Sonny” Souza

Alfred “Sonny” Souza passed away on Sunday, May 10, 2020 at Linn Healthcare Center, East Providence from complications of COVID-19. A former Seekonk resident, he was the husband of the late Norma M. (Vinhateiro) Souza and was the son of the late Elias M. and Louise B. (Fagundes) Souza. He was born in East Providence and would have celebrated his 97 th birthday on May 31.

Al served in the Navy during World War II and was aboard the USS Susan B Anthony when the vessel struck a mine off the Omaha Beach, Normandy during the D-Day invasion. He and all 2,689 shipmates and transport troops were safely rescued as the burning ship sank. The rescue of the “Susie B” is the largest with no fatalities on record. For many years he participated in yearly reunions with the Susan B Anthony crew and a rescue ship, the USS Pinto. He enjoyed training in San Diego, where he spent time
with many relatives in the area.

He was active in the East Providence community, where he established and was President of Custom Woodworking Co. for over 50 years. He was an antique car enthusiast and collector, a former member of MARCOM and enjoyed participating in the Bristol July 4 th parade and the Hershey car meets. He was a member of the R.I. Police Chiefs Association, the East Providence F.O.P.A, the Rotary and was also a member of the Fall River Gun Club. In later years, he enjoyed participating in the RI Post Card Club.

Al is survived by his children Deborah Stephens and her husband, Thomas, of Cape Coral, FL. and Melissa Souza of Seekonk, Ma., 5 grandchildren Alissa Nadeau, Elias Souza, Laura Vannoy, Mark Vannoy and Ethan Souza, as well as 6 great-grandchildren Mason, Michael, Marcus, Ryder and Everly. He is also remembered by his loving friend Joyce Drake, as well as many nephews and nieces. He was the father of the late Alfred W. Souza, and brother of the late Walter Souza, Madelyn Mann and Alice Ricci.

The family would like to thank the staff at Linn Health Care Center for their care and friendship during his years there, especially caregivers Carol and Maria and all who treated him like a family member.

Due to COVID-19, funeral arrangements are private. A memorial mass will be celebrated at a later date when friends and family can join in a celebration of his life.
