Ruth (Barry) McCoy, of East Providence and formerly of Pawtucket died on February 16, 2017 at The Tockwotton Home in East Providence surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of the late William J. McCoy who predeceased her in 2014.

Mrs. McCoy was born in Pawtucket, the daughter of the late Patrick Henry and Mary Catherine (Murphy) Barry. She graduated from Regis College in Weston, MA and was a registered dietician and taught chemistry at St. Joseph's Hospital in Providence before becoming a full-time homemaker.

Ruth was on the boards of the Providence Bridge Club, Pawtucket Day Nursery and Pawtucket Visiting Nurses. She was a corporate member of Memorial and Butler Hospitals. Her most notable achievement was being the first woman selected to serve on a governor's commission. She was a commissioner for Governor John Chafee and participated in the joint commission task force for standardization of hospital regulations.

She enjoyed oil painting, traveling and cooking but her two true loves were golfing and socializing at Wannamoisett Country Club where she was an active member for almost sixty years and bridge at which she excelled.

She graced us with her intelligence, style and keen sense of humor. She was a friend to all that met her.

She was a long time communicate at St Teresa's Church in Pawtucket.

Mrs. McCoy is survived by her children; Joseph P. McCoy and his wife Margaret of Houston Texas, Thomas P. McCoy and his wife Linda of Lincoln and Betsy McCoy of Medfield Ma. She also leaves her daughter in law Lynda McCoy and her seven grandchildren; Melanie M. McCoy, Sarah E. Higdon, Kathlene E. McCoy, Elizabeth A. McCoy, Carolyn M. McCoy, Jennifer L. McCoy and W. Barry McCoy.

She was the mother of the late W. Barry McCoy and John F. McCoy, and the sister of the late Dr. Ambrose G. Barry, John J. Barry, and Mary Grace Barry Callahan.

The funeral for Mrs. McCoy will be Tuesday at 9:00 am from the Manning-Heffern Funeral Home, 68 Broadway, Pawtucket. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Sebastians Church, 67 Cole Avenue, Providence at 10:00 am. Her burial will be in the family lot at St. Mary's Cemetery, 103 Pine Street, Pawtucket. The calling hours for Mrs. McCoy will be Monday from 4-7 pm in the funeral home.
